âThe plan is over,â I tell Josh.
âWhat do you mean?â
âI messed up,â I say, but I donât know if I did. Maybe itâs for the best that I finally revealed the secret Iâd been carrying. Ever since I told Hayes, Iâve felt lighter. Besides, he was right. My vendetta against Ashley isnât healthy. And now that Iâve talked to Hayes, I canât be sure if I really wanted him back for me or if it had to do with Ashley all along. And now I just want to forget the whole thing. To move on with my life, like Hayes told me too.
Joshâs eyes narrow. âWhat did you do?â
So I tell him. I share the entire conversation I had with Hayes.
When I finish, he stares at me in disbelief. âBut that wasnât the plan,â he says, stating the obvious. âWhy would you do that without talking to me first?â
âBecause it wasnât about you, Josh. It was about me, and what I needed to do.â
He nods slowly. âOkay, but that doesnât mean we have to abandon the plan completely.â I can see the wheels in his head turning.
Before he can spout off some new tactic, I cut him off, âI donât even think I want Hayes back anymore. Iâm done, okay?â Whirling around, I attempt to leave.
But Joshâs hand stops me. His fingers circle around my wrist tightly. âWait,â he says. âYouâre still coming to the wedding with me, right?â
I peer over my shoulder at him and shake my head. âI canât.â
âBut youâre the one who convinced me to go,â he says.
âYouâll be fine without me.â
âI didnât even want to go, and now I have to alone?â He grunts in frustration. âAre you freakinâ kidding me?â
I turn to him. âJosh, I really am sorry.â
He moves closer to me, his hands gently resting on my waist. âPlease, Talia. Just come with me to the wedding like we planned.â
âIâm sure you can find someone else to take.â
âThe weddingâs this weekend. Who will I find on such short notice?â
I shrug, acutely aware of the fact that his hands are still on my waist. âI donât know. Why donât you call up one of the girls in your little black book? Surely you have one.â
âVery funny,â he says dryly.
I smile. âIâm sure youâll work it out.â
His grip tightens on me. âI donât want to go with anyone else. I want to go with you.â
âJosh, the jig is up,â I say, wondering what heâs not understanding. Wriggling, I slip out of his grip. âI came on to Hayes. Heâs going to figure out that this is a farce. Thereâs no reason to keep this up.â
âDamn it, Talia, will you stop? Listen to what Iâm saying,â he snaps, and I freeze at the intensity in his voice. âIâm not asking you to play this game anymore. Iâm asking you to come to my dadâs wedding because I canât do this alone. And I donât just want anyone there with me. I want you.â His face nears mine. When he lowers it, his nose gently nuzzles my cheek.
